i wrote this to the paper recently…

At a local emporium, I could not help but hear the echoes of an evil I thought perhaps I would never have to hear again. A certain gentleman’s voice carried on about the changes in our region. The other fellow chimed in with an acknowledgment of the great degree of change.

“ Remember old so-and-so’s boot shop ? ” our first speaker queried.

“ Yeah, that man had the boots, didn’t he ? ”

On and on this aimless chatter went until time for the conversation to break up.

“ The county don’t work Monday, you know ?” “ Robert E. Lee day ?” And I think I heard the first man say, “ At least they got the right man. ” Racial slurs and slanders are all too common, aren’t they ? You may say “ So what, Steve ? You can’t change people. ” But what really bothers me is the man who uttered the evil words about ignoring Dr. King and worshipping the Confederate general was wearing the badge of the County Sheriff’s Office. Friend, what you say in private is your problem, but when you are in public, racial slander has no place. Isn’t that right ? Steve Gunter
